Astronomical Unit and Distances to Stars

I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention in class but then suddenly something my teacher said grabbed my attention, I don't honestly know what exactly it was, but he was talking about the expanding balloon model of the Universe, saying that this idea went back to a 'big bang' as the start of the universe. What was interesting was what he said following that, I don't remember his exact words but the gist of what he said was 'I've got one question about the bang bang theory, what and who? What came before to cause it? The second law of thermodynamics states that nothing can be created from nothing.' He continued saying that Stephen Hawking had theories for tiny fractions of a second after and progression from there about what was happening but he brought us back to the question, 'but what about before that? Where did the big bang come from?' Interesting thought.
